The United Arab Emirates (UAE) experienced heavy rainfall on Tuesday, resulting in waterlogged roads and significant disruptions across the region. Dubai, in particular, faced flooding in various areas following the downpour, leading to the temporary suspension of flight operations at Dubai International Airport.
According to reports, the intense storm prompted a 25-minute halt in operations at Dubai airport before resuming. However, major flooding on roads leading to the airport persisted, with forecasts indicating continued unsettled weather until the following morning.
The Dubai International Airport’s official handle advised travelers to check their flight statuses with airlines, anticipate additional travel time due to traffic delays, and consider using the Dubai Metro for smoother transit amidst the weather challenges.
The heavy rainfall, amounting to over 120 millimeters (4.75 inches) by evening, surpassed the typical annual average for precipitation in the desert nation. The downpour led to flight disruptions at the world’s busiest airport, with police and emergency personnel navigating flooded streets and addressing water-related issues in homes and public areas.
As a precautionary measure, schools across the UAE remained closed, and government employees resorted to remote work arrangements due to the challenging road conditions. Some individuals braved the weather, encountering deeper-than-expected water levels on certain roads.
Authorities deployed tanker trucks to pump out excess water from streets and highways, while residents grappled with water entering homes, necessitating efforts to bail out flooded areas.
The unusual rainfall in the UAE, typically arid and dry, occurs sporadically during the cooler winter months. The lack of regular drainage infrastructure exacerbates flooding situations, highlighting the need for improved water management systems.
Neighboring Oman also faced severe weather conditions, with heavy rains resulting in casualties, including the tragic loss of 18 lives, according to the country’s National Committee for Emergency Management. Among the victims were schoolchildren caught in a vehicle during the flooding, prompting condolences from leaders across the region.
