What Cabinet Rank Means for Soumyabrata Sengupta

At 27, Soumyabrata Sengupta has acquired a distinction that remains unusual even among those who enter public life early: he has been appointed Advisor to the Government of West Bengal with Cabinet Rank.

The appointment places Sengupta in a position that carries considerable political and administrative weight. It also marks another stage in a career that has moved between entrepreneurship, political communications, national security, research, writing and public affairs, often simultaneously.

For someone of his age, the Cabinet Rank is particularly significant. Sengupta began his professional journey as an entrepreneur in 2018, when he was 19 and still pursuing his undergraduate degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. He had also completed Basic Military Training at the Officers Training Academy, Gaya. What followed was a career that increasingly moved beyond conventional definitions of journalism or communications.

Sengupta built and exited businesses including BHACo and Chanakya Strategic Advisors. In 2022, he founded Spearkraft and Spearkraft Academy, described as India’s first influencer school. He is no longer associated with Spearkraft and has since moved on to establish Qavrion Communications, a new-age communications firm. The firm is deliberately selective in its client intake, with its existing portfolio including high-profile public figures, politicians and publicly listed companies.

He is also working on the Global Wellness Initiative, described as India’s first integrated mental health platform.

His professional life has not been confined to business. Sengupta has written three books, Detech: How Technology Controls Your Life and How to Use It Wisely, Operation Sindoor: India’s Shadow War and the Truth Behind the Smoke, and War’s Hidden Ledger: Power, Profit, and the Politics of Conflict. Operation Sindoor, in particular, has reportedly crossed sales of 1,00,000 copies.

His public career has also increasingly intersected with politics and national security. Sengupta currently serves as State Vice President, Digital Narratives, for the BJP in West Bengal. He has now been given the additional responsibility of serving as Advisor to the Government of West Bengal with Cabinet Rank.

The appointment follows several years of work in political communications and strategic affairs. Sengupta previously served for six months as Media Advisor to the Government of India on National Security and Foreign Affairs. He has also undertaken an assignment with the Intelligence Bureau. His work has taken him into areas where communications, national security and political strategy overlap, including work in the North East.

That work has also brought him recognition from military circles. Sengupta has documented the lives and experiences of military personnel serving in sensitive areas of the North East. Veterans associated with the Territorial Army subsequently honoured him with the ceremonial rank of Major. The distinction is ceremonial rather than an official military commission. He has also been commended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his work relating to the region.

Sengupta’s profile extends beyond domestic political and strategic work. He has represented India on international platforms including the United Nations and BRICS. He has addressed the United Nations General Assembly and has been described as the youngest Indian male to do so. His writing has appeared in national publications, including The Indian Express.

His work has also been recognised through honours including the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Leadership Award and the Rabindra Ratna Puraskar 2026.

The significance of the latest appointment, however, lies not merely in the title. Cabinet Rank is a recognition that places Sengupta within a considerably more consequential sphere of public affairs at an age when most professionals are still establishing their careers.

Several prominent figures are understood to have congratulated Sengupta following the appointment, including Vikram Sood, former Chief of the Research and Analysis Wing, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, Chief of the Air Staff, and Rajesh Kumar Singh, Defence Secretary of India. Sengupta has also received a personal letter of congratulations from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, an unusual form of recognition.

There is another dimension to Sengupta’s career that has received less attention than his political and entrepreneurial work. He has spent considerable time on academic research and intends to pursue a PhD in Journalism and Mass Communication. Having completed a Master’s degree in the discipline, Sengupta has indicated that he does not intend to stop there. Research, particularly at the intersection of media, politics, public affairs and society, has increasingly become a significant part of his professional interests.

This combination of entrepreneurship, public affairs, research, writing and strategic communications has led some observers to describe Sengupta as a polymath rather than a professional confined to a single field. MyNation has previously described him as one of India’s top 10 political consultants.

The trajectory is striking largely because of how early it began. Sengupta entered entrepreneurship at 19, built companies, experienced exits, moved into strategic communications, wrote books, worked on national security and international affairs, pursued academic research and eventually entered formal political and public life.

At 27, the Cabinet Rank therefore represents more than an appointment. It is the latest institutional recognition of a career that has developed across several disciplines and, unusually, has done so at considerable speed.

For Sengupta, the immediate challenge will be to translate that varied experience into public responsibility. Cabinet Rank brings visibility, but it also brings expectations. The measure of the appointment will ultimately not be the distinction attached to his name, but the work that follows it.
