A woman in Taiwan is under investigation for allegedly hiding her deceased father’s body in her home for several years to continue receiving his military pension. The incident came to light when authorities grew suspicious after being denied entry into her residence for dengue-prevention measures last November.
According to reports, the woman, who lived with her father for over five decades, initially evaded questions about his whereabouts. She first claimed he was in a nursing home, then changed her story to say he had been taken to the mainland by her brother, who was later revealed to have been deceased for 50 years.
Upon further questioning, the woman failed to provide evidence of her father’s whereabouts or his death certificate. Subsequently, police conducted a search of her property and discovered skeletal remains in a black plastic garbage bag.
Forensic experts estimated that the body had decomposed over a long period, indicating that the father had been deceased for quite some time. Notably, he had served as a military veteran for more than 20 years and was entitled to a monthly pension based on his rank and service history.
Under Taiwanese law, offenses related to damaging or abandoning a corpse can result in significant penalties, including imprisonment for up to five years. The severity of the crime may be further increased if it involves a direct relative or close family member.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death is ongoing, and authorities will determine the extent of the woman’s involvement in the case. Meanwhile, she is undergoing medical treatment while under police supervision.
