Taiwan’s defense ministry announced on Wednesday that it had detected 30 Chinese military aircraft around the island within a 24-hour period, marking one of the highest daily numbers recorded this year. The escalation in military activities underscores the ongoing tensions between Taiwan and China, with Beijing asserting its claim over the self-ruling island.
Of the 30 aircraft, 20 were reported to have crossed into Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), prompting a response from Taiwan’s armed forces. The defense ministry stated that patrol aircraft, Navy vessels, and coastal missile systems were deployed to monitor and respond to the situation.
This recent surge in Chinese military incursions follows a trend of what experts describe as “grey zone” actions, falling short of direct acts of war but contributing to heightened regional instability. These actions have become more frequent since the election of President Tsai Ing-wen in 2016, who advocates for Taiwan’s independence, a stance vehemently opposed by Beijing.
The incoming administration in Taiwan, led by President-elect Lai Ching-te and Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), is set to take office on May 20. The selection of Lai, who is viewed unfavorably by Beijing, signals potential challenges ahead in cross-strait relations.
The issue of Taiwan was recently discussed during a call between US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Biden urged Xi to uphold peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, emphasizing the United States’ commitment to Taiwan’s defense. Despite switching recognition to Beijing in 1979, the US continues to support Taiwan militarily and politically, as mandated by the Taiwan Relations Act passed by Congress.
China’s efforts to diplomatically isolate Taiwan have intensified in recent years, with Nauru becoming the latest nation to switch recognition from Taipei to Beijing in January. This move leaves only 12 countries, including the Vatican, that officially recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state.
