In a recent development, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized the container ship MSC Aries off the coast of the UAE, sparking international concern. The vessel, carrying 25 crew members, including 17 Indians, was intercepted near the Strait of Hormuz in what Iran described as a “heliborne operation.”
According to Iran’s state-owned IRNA news agency, the ship, affiliated with the Italian-Swiss group MSC and chartered to MSC by Gortal Shipping Inc, was boarded by Iranian authorities via helicopter. The incident has raised diplomatic tensions, with both the US and India calling for the immediate release of the vessel and its crew.
“We are aware that Iran has taken control of the cargo ship ‘MSC Aries.’ We have learnt that there are 17 Indian nationals onboard. We are in touch with the Iranian authorities through diplomatic channels, both in Tehran and in Delhi, to ensure the security, welfare and early release of the Indian nationals,” stated a source familiar with the situation.
MSC, the ship’s operator, expressed regret over the incident and confirmed their collaboration with relevant authorities to ensure the safety of the crew and the vessel’s safe return. The US National Security Council condemned Iran’s actions, labeling the seizure as a violation of international law and an act of piracy.
“We call on Iran to release the vessel and its international crew immediately. Seizing a civilian vessel without provocation is a blatant violation of international law, and an act of piracy by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps,” said National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson.
The seizure comes amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East, particularly concerns over potential Iranian retaliation following an airstrike on the consular section of its embassy in Syria’s Damascus. Iran has linked the seized vessel to Israel, stating it is “related to the Zionist regime (Israel) in the Gulf.”
In response to the situation, Israel’s military spokesman Daniel Hagari warned against further escalation, emphasizing that Iran would bear the consequences of any escalation in the region. “Iran will bear the consequences for choosing to escalate the situation any further,” stated Hagari, highlighting Israel’s heightened state of readiness.
The incident underscores the delicate geopolitical dynamics in the region and the ongoing challenges of maritime security in critical waterways like the Strait of Hormuz, vital to global trade routes.
