India has expressed deep concern over recent attacks on the Hindu community in Chittagong, Bangladesh, urging the Bangladeshi government to take strict action against extremist elements responsible for stoking communal tensions. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the incidents, emphasizing the need for Dhaka to prioritize the safety and security of its minority communities.
Addressing the issue at a media briefing, Jaiswal pointed to incendiary social media posts as a catalyst for unrest in Chittagong, which led to threats against Hindu community members and incidents of looting. “It is our request to the government there to control and take action against these elements and take strong measures to ensure the safety of the Hindu and other minority communities,” Jaiswal said, underscoring Bangladesh’s “special responsibility” to safeguard its minorities. The MEA spokesperson added that India had previously voiced “serious concern” following reports of vandalism at a Puja mandap and a theft at a Kali temple.
In a separate query, Jaiswal addressed the Awami League’s social media post congratulating U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, clarifying that India maintains its position of recognizing Sheikh Hasina as the former prime minister of Bangladesh. Additionally, he shared updates on other diplomatic matters, including India’s engagement with Myanmar.
Highlighting a recent workshop by the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) on constitutionalism and federalism, Jaiswal explained that it aimed to foster dialogue among Myanmar stakeholders, contributing to a Myanmar-led solution to the country’s challenges. “India remains a steadfast supporter of democracy, peace, and stability in Myanmar,” he said.
On regional security, Jaiswal also addressed recent developments in Ladakh, confirming the disengagement of Indian and Chinese troops at two key friction points. He dispelled recent reports of roadblocks in the patrolling process, adding that the Indian Army had issued a clarification to dispel any misunderstandings.
The MEA’s statements reflect India’s concerns for regional stability and the protection of minority communities, underscoring the nation’s commitment to safeguarding peace in its neighboring countries.
