The southernmost state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, is reeling from devastating heavy rains that have led to the loss of at least 37 lives, with dozens still unaccounted for. The situation remains critical as more than 70 people are reported missing, and over 23,000 individuals have been displaced in this region bordering Uruguay and Argentina.

According to Rio Grande do Sul’s civil defense, nearly half of the state’s 497 cities have been affected by the ongoing floods. Streets have been transformed into rivers in several towns, while roads and bridges lie destroyed in the wake of the storm. Landslides and the partial collapse of a dam structure at a hydroelectric power plant have further exacerbated the crisis.

Authorities are on high alert as a second dam in Bento Goncalves faces the risk of collapse, prompting evacuations of residents living nearby. The unique geographical position of Rio Grande do Sul, where tropical and polar atmospheres converge, has led to erratic weather patterns with intense rainfall alternating with periods of drought.

Local scientists attribute the intensification of these weather patterns to climate change, noting that similar heavy rains had previously struck the state in September, resulting in floods that claimed over 50 lives. This recent catastrophe follows a prolonged period of drought caused by the La Nina phenomenon, emphasizing the severity of the current situation.

Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite has described this as one of the most critical cases the state has ever faced, with the death toll expected to rise as authorities struggle to access certain areas. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has visited the affected regions to assess rescue efforts and support the state’s response to the crisis.
