Ukrainian President Zelensky Visits Canada, A Close Ally, Amid Skepticism from US Lawmakers

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has embarked on his first official visit to Canada, a close ally that has been unwavering in its support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. This visit comes after President Zelensky faced skepticism from some US lawmakers regarding further military aid. Canada, however, is expected to reinforce its commitment to Ukraine by announcing an increase in military assistance during the visit.

Canada has emerged as one of Kyiv’s staunchest supporters in the ongoing war against Russia, and this visit is poised to strengthen the bilateral relationship further. A government official has indicated that Canada will reveal plans to send additional weapons to Ukraine, highlighting its commitment to defending the rule of law and the international rules-based order.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau affirmed Canada’s enduring support for Ukraine, emphasizing their dedication to stand firm in assisting Ukraine for as long as necessary. Trudeau’s statement was made in New York ahead of President Zelensky’s visit.

During his visit, President Zelensky is scheduled to address the Canadian parliament in Ottawa and hold a joint news conference with Prime Minister Trudeau. While he had addressed Canadian legislators virtually in March 2022, this in-person visit is expected to reinforce the strong partnership between the two nations.

Ihor Michalchyshyn, the executive director of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress lobby group, emphasized the significance of Canada’s involvement in international bodies like the Group of Seven (G7) and NATO. He noted that all major Canadian political parties support Ukraine, making it appropriate for President Zelensky to seek increased support from Canada.

With 1.4 million people of Ukrainian descent, Canada has one of the largest Ukrainian communities outside Ukraine and Russia. This strong cultural connection underscores Canada’s commitment to Ukraine’s cause.

In contrast to the skepticism faced by Zelensky in Washington, Canada has consistently demonstrated its support for Ukraine, although it lacks the financial and military resources of larger countries like the United States and Germany. Since the beginning of 2022, Canada has pledged over C$8 billion ($5.9 billion) in aid to Ukraine, including substantial military assistance.

While the exact details of the arms deal to be announced by Prime Minister Trudeau during Zelensky’s visit are yet to be finalized, it is expected to surpass the C$33 million commitment made earlier to help Ukraine procure missile defenses. Security analyst David Perry anticipates that Canada may offer additional combat support vehicles and provide training for Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets as part of the expanded arms deal.

President Zelensky’s visit to Canada reaffirms the strong bond between the two nations and underscores Canada’s unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine in its quest for peace and security in the region.
