A woman has sparked renewed interest in the internet’s most famous optical illusion dress after discovering it at a yard sale, nearly nine years after it became a viral sensation. In 2015, a simple photograph of the dress triggered an online debate about its color, with people divided into two camps: those who perceived it as black and blue and others who insisted it was gold and white.
The dress, which became a cultural phenomenon, not only captivated social media but also left millions questioning their perception of color. The intense discussions surrounding the dress continue to resonate today, thanks to Amanda Rubinstein, who shared her unexpected find on TikTok.
While browsing through a yard sale, Rubinstein was thrilled to discover the infamous dress and immediately shared her excitement in a TikTok video. “I’m at a yard sale and they have a lot of great stuff, including the dress,” she exclaimed, adding, “I knew it was blue,” referring to the heated debate that once engulfed the internet.
According to Rubinstein, the seller revealed that the dress had been in her closet since 2015, coinciding with the dress’s viral fame. Although Rubinstein couldn’t confirm if it was the exact dress from the viral photo, she noted that it belonged to the same collection.
Reflecting on her find, she stated, “The dress was one of the first items I saw when I walked up to the yard sale. I immediately screamed, ‘Oh my goodness, you have THE DRESS!’ The owners and other neighbors had a nice laugh at my expressive reaction upon seeing it.”
Her TikTok video quickly went viral, reigniting discussions about the dress’s color. Users flooded the comments section, sharing their opinions on its hue. One commenter wrote, “What a beautiful white and gold dress!” while another remarked, “This is the first time I’ve not seen it as white and gold.”
The original viral image was posted on a blog by Cecilia Bleasdale ahead of her daughter Grace’s wedding, and the dress’s blueish tint contributed to the confusion regarding its color. Despite being confirmed to be blue with black lace, the optical illusion left millions perceiving it as white and gold, leading to a global phenomenon.
