The US House has approved a bill led by Republicans to sanction the International Criminal Court (ICC) following allegations of war crimes against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The bill, known as the Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act, imposes mandatory penalties and visa bans on individuals from foreign countries working with or funding the ICC in cases involving the US, Israel, or allied nations outside the ICC.
ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan called for Netanyahu’s arrest, citing “reasonable grounds to believe” he committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Netanyahu dismissed the charges as “absurd” during an interview on ABC’s ‘Good Morning America.’
The Biden administration, while expressing concern about the ICC’s actions, emphasized seeking more effective ways to defend Israel and promote international justice without sanctioning the ICC directly.
