The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has revealed staggering figures for the estimated cost of rebuilding Gaza following the recent conflict, ranging from $30 billion to $40 billion. UN assistant secretary-general Abdallah al-Dardari emphasized the unprecedented scale of destruction, likening the effort to post-World War II reconstruction.
Speaking at a press conference in Amman, Jordan, Dardari highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that Gaza’s reconstruction cannot wait for decades. He emphasized the need to swiftly restore housing, infrastructure, and essential services to normalize the lives of Palestinians.
The enormity of the task is reflected in the estimated 37 million tonnes of rubble resulting from bombardments and explosions, a figure that continues to increase daily. Dardari underscored that 72 percent of residential buildings in Gaza have either been completely or partially destroyed, adding to the immense challenge of reconstruction.
The UNDP’s top priority is to ensure a rapid and efficient rebuilding process within the first three years following the cessation of hostilities. However, uncertainties regarding the end of the conflict and the future governance of Gaza add complexity to the planning and implementation of reconstruction efforts.
Dardari stressed the importance of careful planning, efficiency, and flexibility in reconstruction initiatives to address the evolving situation on the ground. The international community’s support and collaboration will be crucial in achieving the ambitious goal of rebuilding Gaza and restoring normalcy to the lives of its residents.
