India’s Uma Sekhar has made history by securing a pivotal position on the Governing Council of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) in Rome. The elections, which witnessed a competitive race among 32 candidates including representatives from the US, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and France, resulted in Sekhar’s remarkable win, garnering an impressive 45 out of 59 votes in the first round.

Describing this victory as a significant milestone for India, government sources highlighted Sekhar’s accomplishment as the first woman candidate from the nation to secure a position on the esteemed Governing Council of UNIDROIT.

Sekhar’s resounding win required a minimum of 21 votes to secure a spot on the council, securing her place in the body for the term spanning 2024 to 2028. The Governing Council of UNIDROIT comprises 25 distinguished legal experts who play a crucial role in shaping the organization’s direction and objectives.

“The elections held in Rome marked a historic moment as Uma Sekhar clinched a commanding victory, attaining 45 votes out of 59 in the initial round,” revealed a government source.

The competitive election witnessed participation from a diverse array of candidates representing various nations. Notably, candidates from influential nations such as Russia, the US, and China vied for positions on the Governing Council, with Sekhar’s triumph standing out amidst the competitive field.

UNIDROIT, an independent intergovernmental organization headquartered in Rome, focuses on studying and modernizing commercial and private laws. Its primary objective revolves around examining the needs and methods essential for harmonizing and coordinating laws between states and groups of states. The institute aims to formulate uniform law instruments, principles, and rules to achieve these objectives.
