As high-ranking diplomats from the United States and Russia convened in Saudi Arabia for discussions on the ongoing war in Ukraine, Kyiv announced a significant battlefield victory. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence released a video purporting to show the destruction of Russia’s advanced S-350 missile defence system in a precision airstrike.
Ukraine’s Bold Claim
The video, reportedly captured by a drone, shows a convoy of Russian military vehicles moving across an agricultural landscape. The footage then zooms in on what appears to be launch vehicles of the S-350 surface-to-air missile system. Moments later, the vehicles are struck in an airstrike, generating plumes of smoke and debris.
According to Ukraine’s defence ministry, the footage was provided by the elite Black Forest Brigade, an artillery reconnaissance unit of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The exact location and date of the strike were not disclosed. The Kyiv Post quoted a statement from the Black Forest Brigade saying, “Thanks to the skillful actions of the reconnaissance men of the Chornyi Lis (Black Forest) Artillery Reconnaissance Brigade, we have managed to detect and destroy Russia’s latest short- and medium-range S-350 Vityaz anti-aircraft missile system.”
If verified, this strike would mark a significant achievement for Ukraine and a major embarrassment for Russia, which has long touted the effectiveness of its S-300, S-350, and S-400 air defence systems.
What is the S-350 Air Defence System?
The S-350 Vityaz is one of Russia’s latest medium-range surface-to-air missile defence systems, designed to replace the aging S-300PS and Buk-M1-2 systems. Each S-350 unit reportedly costs over $130 million and consists of a mobile launcher with 12 missiles, an advanced radar system, and a command post.
With a range of up to 120 kilometers, the S-350 is designed to neutralize aerial threats, including cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles, drones, and military aircraft. It features AI-driven automation, allowing it to track, detect, and engage targets without human intervention.
Implications for China and India
The reported destruction of the S-350 raises concerns for China and India, both of which have acquired the more advanced S-400 missile defence system from Russia in recent years. While the S-350 is a medium-range system, the S-400 is a long-range variant with even greater capabilities. However, both systems utilize missiles from the same family, making the loss of an S-350 unit potentially alarming for countries relying on Russian air defence technology.
If Ukraine’s claim is confirmed, it could cast doubt on the effectiveness of Russia’s missile defence systems and impact future arms deals with Moscow. So far, Russian officials have not responded to Ukraine’s video or addressed the reported destruction of its S-350 system.
