In a decisive move, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called upon Israel to take immediate action to quell the rising wave of settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. Blinken, currently in San Francisco attending an Asia-Pacific summit, conveyed this urgent plea during a phone conversation with Benny Gantz, an opposition leader who recently joined Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s wartime cabinet.
The call emphasized the pressing need for affirmative measures to de-escalate the mounting tensions in the West Bank, particularly by addressing the surge in extremist settler aggression, as articulated by State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.
Aside from addressing settler violence, Blinken also engaged Gantz in discussions concerning the ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at securing the release of hostages held by Hamas militants. The hostages were seized following a significant raid launched into Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7.
Israeli officials have reported around 240 individuals being taken hostage during the aforementioned attacks by Hamas militants, resulting in casualties numbering approximately 1,200, predominantly civilians.
In response to these events, Hamas government officials have alleged that Israel’s subsequent bombardment and ground offensive have led to the deaths of over 11,500 individuals, with a majority being civilians, including thousands of children.
The Gaza Strip, under the control of Hamas, remains separate from the West Bank, which operates under Israeli occupation with limited Palestinian Authority autonomy. The Palestinian Authority’s leaders, who stand as adversaries to Hamas, have highlighted increased harassment faced by Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since the initiation of the conflict.
Gantz, a centrist retired general, opted to join Netanyahu’s wartime cabinet despite concerns, forming a coalition with far-right parties that staunchly support Jewish settlement expansion in the West Bank.
The ongoing dialogue between the U.S. and Israel signifies an international effort to address the escalating situation in the region, underscoring the necessity for immediate action to mitigate violence and pave the way for stability in the conflict-torn territories.
