U.S. Soldier Travis King, Who Crossed into North Korea, Now in U.S. Custody

In a remarkable turn of events, U.S. soldier Travis King, who crossed into North Korea during a civilian tour of a border village on July 18, is now in American custody. This development follows North Korea’s decision to expel him after completing their questioning.

Travis King, a former serviceman who had served in South Korea, captured international attention when he made an unauthorized sprint across the border into North Korea. This act made him the first American confirmed to be detained in North Korea in nearly five years.

According to unnamed U.S. officials, Travis King was transferred to U.S. custody in China following North Korea’s announcement that they had finished their interrogation of the soldier. However, North Korea did not specify when the expulsion would occur or its exact location.

North Korea’s statement on the matter revealed that Travis King had confessed to illegally entering the country, citing his dissatisfaction with what he perceived as “inhuman maltreatment and racial discrimination” within the U.S. Army. He was also reported to be “disillusioned about the unequal U.S. society.”

“The relevant organ of the DPRK decided to expel Travis King, a soldier of the U.S. Army who illegally intruded into the territory of the DPRK,” the statement read.

Travis King’s decision to cross into North Korea came as he was supposed to be heading to Fort Bliss, Texas, following his release from prison in South Korea, where he had served time for an assault conviction.

Travis King’s mother, Claudine Gates, expressed her relief at the news of his impending return, saying, “He has so many reasons to come home.” She emphasized that her son had strong family ties in the United States and a compelling motivation to return.

Notably, unauthorized crossings across the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea are exceedingly rare. The few Americans who have crossed into North Korea in the past have included soldiers, missionaries, human rights advocates, or individuals driven by curiosity about the reclusive nation.

As Travis King’s return to the United States is anticipated, further details regarding the circumstances of his return and any legal proceedings will be closely monitored.
