Two Iranian Hardline Clerics Killed in Shooting at Tehran Supreme Court Complex

In a shocking attack on Saturday, two prominent hardline clerics from Iran’s Supreme Court were shot dead at the Palace of Justice in Tehran. The deceased, Mohammad Mogheiseh and Ali Razini, both served as judges in the country’s highest court. The attack, which also left one of the clerics’ bodyguards injured, ended with the shooter taking his own life. Iranian state media reported that the assailant, armed with a handgun, died by suicide shortly after carrying out the attack.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, expressed condolences over the “martyrdom” of the two clerics, both of whom had controversial pasts. The killings, which occurred at the heart of the Iranian judiciary, have prompted investigations into the identity and motives of the attacker. The Iranian judiciary’s spokesperson, Asghar Jahangir, described the shooter as an “infiltrator” within the courthouse complex, suggesting he had some connection to the facility.

The assailant’s background is still unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Initial investigations have revealed that the attacker was not a client or a party to any ongoing case at the Supreme Court. The Iranian authorities have begun questioning individuals and making arrests in connection to the incident.

Both clerics had been involved in controversial judicial actions, with Razini being the target of an assassination attempt in 1999, and Mogheiseh facing U.S. sanctions since 2019. The U.S. Treasury Department accused Mogheiseh of overseeing “unfair trials” and sentencing journalists, internet users, and members of the Baha’i minority to long prison terms. Razini was also linked to the 1988 mass executions of dissidents, a dark chapter in Iranian history.

The attack on two high-profile judicial figures comes amidst growing tension within Iran, which has been grappling with ongoing economic challenges exacerbated by Western sanctions and a shadow conflict with Israel. While such attacks are rare in Iran, they underline the increasing instability in the country, particularly within its judiciary.

The Palace of Justice, located in the capital, is one of many branches of Iran’s Supreme Court, which is responsible for hearing appeals from lower courts. As the investigation into the attack continues, many are left questioning whether this could be part of a larger movement against the ruling elite. The motive behind the killings remains unclear, but the high-profile nature of the attack has raised concerns about the security of top Iranian officials.
