The world’s heaviest cat, known as Crumbs, tragically passed away just weeks after entering a specialized weight-loss program at a veterinary center in Perm, Russia. Rescued from a basement of a hospital, Crumbs had gained viral fame due to his staggering weight of 38 pounds (approximately 17 kg), a result of a diet consisting of scraps, biscuits, and soup.
Despite making notable progress—shedding 7 pounds during his time at the fat camp—Crumbs developed sudden breathing difficulties that led to his untimely death. Veterinarians suspect that layers of fat may have concealed cancerous tumors on his spleen and other internal organs, ultimately leading to multiple organ failure.
Galiana More, the owner of the cat shelter caring for Crumbs, shared her heartache over the loss, explaining that the tumors might have gone unnoticed due to the cat’s ability to mask symptoms until it was too late. “Cats always hold on to the last; they do not show this disease,” More told NewsX. She noted that Crumbs had shown no signs of respiratory distress or digestive issues prior to his decline, emphasizing the difficulty of diagnosing health problems in such overweight cats.
Throughout his rehabilitation, Crumbs was on a strict diet and exercise plan that included walking on an underwater treadmill, aimed at helping him lose weight gradually. Unfortunately, his caretakers recognized that despite their best efforts, “sometimes miracles do not happen.” In a poignant statement, they expressed their grief, saying, “Sometimes even the strongest cats cannot cope. Sometimes even the best doctors, rehabilitation centers, and support from people around the world are not able to help.”
Crumbs had become a symbol of hope and resilience for many, and his loss has resonated deeply with those who followed his journey. The shelter expressed gratitude for the global support he received, stating, “Thank you for being and staying with Kroshik until his very last breath. Thank you for being the reason why Kroshik believed in good people.” The passing of this beloved feline has sparked conversations about the importance of pet health and the challenges of managing obesity in animals.
