In a tragic incident at Indonesia’s Ijen volcano, a 31-year-old Chinese woman lost her life while trying to pose for photos, slipping and falling into the volcano’s depths. The woman, identified by her surname Huang, was part of a tour group with her husband when the accident occurred.
According to reports from the South China Morning Post and the Chinese newspaper Xiaoxiang Morning Herald, the couple had climbed to the edge of a cliff to witness the renowned “blue fire” phenomenon and the sunrise. While standing near a dead tree for a photo, Huang accidentally stepped on her dress and slipped, falling approximately 75 meters down the cliff. Her husband, who was taking pictures at the time, was unable to prevent the tragedy.
Despite warnings from the tour guide about the dangerous nature of the spot, the woman proceeded with her photo attempt, leading to the fatal accident. It took around two hours to recover her body from the volcano’s depths, leaving her husband devastated.
The Ijen volcano, known for its mesmerizing “blue fire,” attracts numerous tourists eager to witness the natural spectacle. However, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential hazards associated with such tourist activities, especially in volcanic areas.
This tragedy comes in the wake of increased volcanic activity in Indonesia, with Mount Ruang erupting multiple times recently, resulting in evacuations and the closure of Sam Ratulangi international airport. Indonesia, situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” frequently experiences seismic and volcanic events, highlighting the need for caution and adherence to safety guidelines in such areas.
