In a surprising turn of events, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott has announced the suspension of his presidential campaign only days after the third GOP debate. Scott, who had been running with an optimistic and hopeful message, made the announcement during an interview with Fox News on Sunday, November 12.
“I love America more today than I did on May 22. But when I go back to Iowa, it will not be as a presidential candidate. I am suspending my campaign,” Scott declared during the interview, leaving aides and donors shocked by the sudden decision. Two individuals close to the campaign claim they received advance notice.
The super PAC supporting Scott had already pulled its state of television ads back in October, deciding not to make new investments after the recent debate. A Republican official supporting Scott noted that his optimistic message didn’t resonate with the current sentiment of the Republican base.
During the interview with Fox News’ Trey Gowdy, Scott expressed that he would not endorse another Republican candidate in the primary, believing that the best way for him to be helpful is to refrain from endorsements. He also clarified that he has no plans to accept a vice presidential nomination, emphasizing that he ran for president with the goal of becoming president.
“I think I was called to run. I was not called to win, but I certainly was called to run,” Scott stated. He expressed a commitment to respecting the voters’ feedback and suggested that he will continue working hard, looking forward to another opportunity for a White House bid.
Just days before his campaign suspension, during the third GOP debate, Scott delivered a strong response to a question about rising anti-Semitism on college campuses. He proposed pulling federal funding from universities that allow students to encourage terrorism and deporting students on visas who promote Jewish genocide.
Additionally, Scott made headlines by bringing a mystery woman, later revealed as his girlfriend Mindy Noce, on stage at the end of the debate. The revelation about his romantic life followed months of speculation since the launch of his campaign.
