In his relentless pursuit of immortality, 46-year-old software billionaire Bryan Johnson has taken an extraordinary step. He recently traveled to a secluded island for a $20,000 gene therapy treatment aimed at extending his lifespan beyond the natural limit of 120 years. The procedure, conducted by Minicircle, a biohacking company, took place on Roatan Island, off the coast of Honduras.
In a YouTube video titled “I Edited My DNA On A Secret Island (To Live Forever),” Johnson detailed his motivations and experiences. He expressed his belief that gene therapy could be the key to surpassing the human lifespan ceiling of 120 years. “Humans have a 120-year ceiling and so far no one can punch through it – gene therapy might be the answer. I never imagined I would be doing gene therapy on an island off the coast of Honduras,” Johnson stated in the video.
The procedure involved injecting a circular DNA plasmid into Johnson’s stomach and buttocks. This plasmid is designed to enhance muscle strength, slow the aging process, and provide other health benefits. Before receiving the injection, Johnson had his blood drawn as part of the preparation. Following the procedure, he declared, “This therapy could have huge implications not only for me but for all of humanity.” Three weeks after the treatment, he reported a 160% increase in his follistatin levels, which was the target objective.
Despite the potential benefits, Johnson acknowledged the risks associated with gene therapy. “If a therapy caused, say, cancer in my body, there would be nothing I could do to reverse the process,” he said. However, he highlighted Minicircle’s unique “kill switch” feature. If his body reacts negatively to the therapy, he can take the antibiotic tetracycline, which would deactivate the injected DNA molecules.
It is important to note that this procedure is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Johnson’s journey into biohacking and anti-aging therapies is part of his broader Project Blueprint. This ambitious initiative includes a special diet, medical monitoring, various therapies, and a rigorous exercise regimen. He claims that his efforts have reversed his biological age by over five years, giving him the lung capacity and physical endurance of an 18-year-old, the heart of a 37-year-old, and the skin of a 28-year-old.
Earlier this year, Johnson also claimed to have reversed hair loss through another self-developed program. His anti-aging regimen comes with a hefty price tag, costing nearly $2 million annually to maintain.
Johnson’s unconventional methods and significant investment in anti-aging technologies continue to spark debate and curiosity in the scientific community and beyond. Whether his approach will lead to groundbreaking advancements in human longevity remains to be seen, but his journey certainly underscores the lengths to which some individuals will go in the quest for eternal youth.
