A significant earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale shook New Jersey, causing tremors felt as far as New York City. The seismic event, captured in a video shared by EarthCam on social media, showed the iconic Statue of Liberty and the city skyline trembling during the morning hours.
This earthquake marks the strongest seismic activity in New Jersey since a 5.2-intensity quake in 1884. Fortunately, no significant damage has been reported as a result of this recent earthquake.
The video, which quickly gained attention online, sparked various reactions from users. While some expressed concern for individuals near the statue during the earthquake, others used humor to comment on the situation. One user joked about the possibility of a concert nearby, referencing past instances where large gatherings have led to concerns about seismic activity.
Interestingly, just prior to this seismic event, the Statue of Liberty was struck by lightning during a rainstorm. Photographer Dan Martland captured the striking moment when lightning appeared to originate from Lady Liberty’s torch.
Following the earthquake and subsequent aftershocks, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy urged residents to follow emergency protocols and avoid unnecessary calls to emergency services unless facing a genuine crisis. A 4.0-magnitude aftershock was reported in the region, centered northwest of Bridgewater.
