In a disturbing incident that highlights the ongoing issue of hate crimes, a 26-year-old man has been arrested and charged with a hate crime for assaulting a Sikh teenager on a bus in New York. The assailant, identified as Christopher Philippeaux, confronted the 19-year-old Sikh boy who was wearing a turban and made derogatory remarks about his religious attire.
The incident occurred on a New York City MTA bus near 118th Street and Liberty Avenue in Queens on October 15. Philippeaux verbally harassed the young Sikh, saying, “We don’t wear that in this country,” while referring to the turban. He also demanded that the teen remove his mask. The situation escalated as Philippeaux physically assaulted the victim, punching him in the face, back, and head, causing cuts and pain.
Furthermore, the assailant attempted to forcibly remove the Sikh teenager’s turban before fleeing the scene after exiting the bus along Liberty Avenue. The victim, despite sustaining injuries, initially declined medical treatment but was reported to be severely traumatized by the ordeal. Community activist Japneet Singh stated, “The family is very scared for him,” and noted that the victim would be unable to work for the next few days due to his injuries.
Christopher Philippeaux’s arrest has raised concerns as records indicate he was conditionally released on parole in July 2021, having served more than two years in state prison for a previous attempted robbery conviction in Manhattan. He also has a history of other arrests, including a recent incident for obstructing governmental administration in Brooklyn. The details of that case remain sealed.
Hate crimes have been a growing issue of concern, and the Sikh community, like other minority groups, faces increasing incidents of discrimination and violence based on their appearance or religious beliefs. Activists and city officials have expressed their outrage and determination to address and prevent such incidents. Shanifah Rieara, MTA’s Acting Chief Customer Officer, said, “New York City is a melting pot, and this is not how we welcome people to our city.”
