“Shashi Tharoor Applauds India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant for Diplomatic Triumph on Ukraine Issue”

Shashi Tharoor Praises India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant's Diplomacy Efforts on Ukraine Issue

India’s G20 Sherpa, Amitabh Kant, received high praise from Congress leader Shashi Tharoor for his diplomatic efforts in securing a joint communique from G20 leaders regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In a tweet on Saturday, Tharoor lauded Kant’s negotiations with China and Russia, describing it as a “proud moment” for India at the G20 summit.

Mr. Tharoor expressed his admiration, stating, “Well done Amitabh Kant! Looks like the IFS lost an ace diplomat when you opted for the IAS,” while also tagging an NDTV article that covered Mr. Kant’s role in the negotiations.

Speaking to NDTV earlier on Saturday, Amitabh Kant, a 1980-batch IAS officer of Kerala Cadre and former head of Niti Aayog, revealed the extensive efforts required to ensure a consensus among G20 leaders, who held differing positions on Russia’s war on Ukraine. He explained that nearly 200 hours of “nonstop negotiations” were necessary to reach an agreement.

Kant highlighted the multifaceted nature of the negotiations, involving discussions on the economic impact of the conflict and bilateral meetings with Russia and China. Consensus, he noted, was only achieved late on Friday night.

He also emphasized the significance of working collaboratively with sherpas and acknowledged the joint effort of emerging markets, including India, Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia, Mexico, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. These nations collectively applied pressure on G7 nations, ultimately bringing them to the negotiating table.

Reflecting on the challenging process, Kant shared, “From the first draft, we went to a second… and a third. After that, I think what helped were bilateral meets with each country.” He emphasized the importance of establishing each nation’s “red lines” during negotiations.

Amitabh Kant’s successful diplomatic efforts in facilitating a joint G20 communique on the Ukraine crisis underscore India’s role in global diplomacy and its commitment to finding peaceful solutions to complex international issues.

The achievement not only reflects positively on India’s diplomatic prowess but also reinforces its active engagement on the international stage in addressing critical global challenges.
