11 Injured After Lufthansa Flight Hits Severe Turbulence Over Atlantic

Eleven people were injured when a Lufthansa flight from Buenos Aires to Frankfurt encountered severe turbulence while flying over the Atlantic Ocean, according to the airline. The Boeing 747-8, carrying 329 passengers and 19 crew members, was struck by the turbulence as it passed through the intertropical convergence zone—a region known for its unstable weather conditions.

Lufthansa confirmed that the turbulence was brief and occurred without warning, causing injuries to both passengers and crew. A spokesperson from the airline stated that five passengers and six crew members sustained mostly minor injuries, with the injuries reported not posing a threat to the safety of the flight. Fortunately, the flight was able to land safely in Frankfurt without further incident.

The injured passengers and crew members received immediate medical attention upon landing. Lufthansa assured that the safety of the flight was never compromised, and the airline has taken all necessary steps to ensure the well-being of those affected.

This incident adds to a growing list of turbulence-related events. Earlier this year, a Singapore Airlines Boeing 777 experienced extreme turbulence that led to one fatality and multiple injuries. The flight, which was traveling from London to Singapore, was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok.

In addition, other recent turbulence-related incidents include a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Dublin, which resulted in 12 injuries, and an Air Europa flight from Madrid to Montevideo, which saw at least 40 passengers injured after the plane hit strong turbulence and was forced to land in Brazil.

Turbulence-related accidents are among the most common in the airline industry, according to a 2021 study by the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The NTSB study revealed that between 2009 and 2018, turbulence accounted for over a third of all reported airline accidents, with most incidents leading to serious injuries but no significant damage to aircraft.
