Israel Strikes Gaza City of Rafah Following Evacuation Order Amid Ceasefire Stalls

Tensions have escalated in the Gaza Strip as Israel conducted airstrikes in Rafah on Monday, prompting fears of a potential full-scale assault against Palestinian militants. The airstrikes came shortly after Israel issued evacuation orders to parts of southern Gaza, where a significant population displaced by the conflict has sought refuge.

Residents of Rafah reported Israeli military airstrikes targeting areas in the eastern part of the city, near neighborhoods instructed to evacuate. This move follows stalled ceasefire talks in Cairo, raising concerns of intensified hostilities between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian militant group controlling Gaza.

The evacuation orders were communicated through Arabic text messages, phone calls, and flyers, directing Palestinians to relocate to what Israel termed an “expanded humanitarian zone” approximately 20 kilometers (7 miles) away. In response, some families began moving their belongings via donkey carts, pick-up trucks, or on foot amidst adverse weather conditions, including heavy rain.

One refugee, identified as Abu Raed, expressed his concerns about the evacuation, stating, “It has been raining heavily, and we don’t know where to go. I have been worried that this day may come; I now have to see where I can take my family.”

There has been no immediate comment from Israeli officials regarding the airstrikes and evacuation orders. However, Hamas-affiliated Al-Aqsa TV reported Israeli targeting near the evacuated neighborhoods.

The situation in Rafah reflects the fragile ceasefire situation in Gaza, with intermittent violence and diplomatic efforts struggling to bring about a lasting peace agreement. The recent escalation raises concerns about the humanitarian impact on civilians caught in the crossfire and the potential for further escalation in the region.
