In a startling incident in Poland, dozens of anti-tank mines were misplaced and later recovered near a warehouse belonging to Swedish furniture giant IKEA. The incident has led to four Polish soldiers facing charges of neglect of duty, as revealed by prosecutors on Friday.
The incident dates back to July, when a transport of 240 anti-tank mines, being moved by rail from Hajnowka on Poland’s eastern border to an ammunition depot in Mosty, experienced an alarming mishap. The cargo, which was supposed to be offloaded upon arrival, was not completely unloaded, resulting in part of the shipment—specifically, 240 anti-tank mines—continuing on its journey.
The misplaced explosives were eventually discovered on July 16 in a rail siding near an IKEA warehouse. Upon discovery, the army immediately secured the elements, ensuring no harm was caused by the negligence.
The prosecutors handling the case confirmed that the four soldiers were being charged for their failure to properly unload the munitions, which could lead to up to five years of imprisonment. As of now, none of the soldiers have pleaded guilty to the charges.
Malgorzata Dobies-Turulska, the CEO of IKEA Industry Poland, confirmed that the explosives were found in a train wagon at a warehouse belonging to IKEA Industry Orla. She assured the public that the military police quickly retrieved the cargo and worked in close cooperation with the company to ensure safety.
Poland’s Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that appropriate actions were taken following the discovery. He emphasized the role of civilian supervision, which led to the swift recovery and resolution of the issue. He also outlined the corrective measures that were put in place, including inspections and changes in personnel handling such sensitive operations.
As a result of the incident, General Artur Kepczynski, the head of the Armed Forces Support Inspectorate, was reportedly dismissed. However, the Polish army press office has yet to comment on the matter.
This incident highlights the importance of strict procedures in handling military munitions, and the potential consequences of lapses in such operations. The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek further clarification on how the mishap occurred.
