A tragic incident unfolded at an anti-Islam rally in Germany as a 29-year-old police officer lost his life after being repeatedly stabbed. The attack occurred during a rally organized by Pax Europa, a campaign group against radical Islam, in Mannheim, southwest Germany.
The assailant, armed with a knife, targeted several individuals on the market square, injuring five rally participants. The police officer intervened, bravely trying to stop the attacker, but suffered multiple stab wounds to the head in the process.
Despite undergoing emergency surgery and being placed in an artificial coma, the officer succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, as confirmed by local police authorities. Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed deep sorrow over the officer’s death, praising his dedication to public safety.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser condemned the attack, highlighting the need to combat Islamist terror. She emphasized that security authorities are vigilant and focused on addressing the threat posed by Islamist extremism.
Finance Minister Christian Lindner pledged increased financial support for security measures against terrorism, emphasizing the importance of resolute action in defending against such attacks.
The incident comes amidst heightened security concerns in Germany following the Israel-Hamas conflict, with authorities warning of an elevated risk of Islamist attacks. Recent weeks have seen a series of assaults on politicians and public figures, prompting calls for increased vigilance and unity against violence in political discourse.
President Frank-Walter Steinmeier underscored the need to address the growing trend of violence, urging Germans to reject and confront violence in all forms, especially in the context of political debates.
