Panama experienced a nationwide blackout after a fire broke out at the La Chorrera Thermoelectric Power Plant, disrupting electricity and water supply across the country. The incident, triggered by an explosion in one of the plant’s generators, plunged large areas into darkness and halted operations at key water treatment facilities.
Authorities suspect a technical fault within the generator led to the explosion. Firefighters are working to control the blaze, while officials assure the public that power will be gradually restored.
Government Assures Power Restoration
Panama’s President, Jose Raul Mulino, addressed the nation on social media, stating, “The Director of ETESA informs me that the damage was caused by a private power generator that triggered the system’s protection. Service will be restored little by little. Stay calm.”
The power outage has also severely impacted water supply, as many treatment plants and wells rely on the electrical grid. Officials have confirmed that staff remain stationed at water facilities, ready to resume operations once power is restored.
Residents Urged to Stay Calm
Emergency crews are working to resolve the crisis, and authorities have urged residents to remain patient while essential services are gradually reinstated. The government is monitoring the situation closely to prevent further disruptions.
