In a continuation of military activities, North Korea test-fired cruise missiles into the sea on Friday, marking the fourth round of such tests in 2024. The launches occurred shortly after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected unspecified naval projects at a shipyard in Nampho on the west coast, as reported by the Associated Press.

South Korea’s military detected multiple missiles, although a specific number and flight characteristics were not immediately provided. The country’s Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that both the U.S. and South Korean militaries are analyzing the missile launches into the western sea. These tests unfold against a backdrop of escalating tensions involving South Korea, Japan, and the United States.

Kim Jong Un, as paraphrased by North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), emphasized the importance of strengthening the country’s naval force to defend maritime sovereignty and intensify war preparations. While the KCNA did not specify the types of warships being built in Nampho, it noted their relevance to a five-year military development plan outlined during a ruling party congress in early 2021.

During his inspections in Nampho, Kim Jong Un assessed the progress of naval projects and addressed remaining technological challenges. He instructed officials and workers to complete these efforts unconditionally within the designated timeframe of the plan, extending through 2025.

The KCNA report highlighted North Korea’s ambition to bolster its naval capabilities, including the development of advanced military assets like nuclear-powered submarines and underwater-launched nuclear missiles. Kim Jong Un’s recent actions align with a broader strategy outlined during the ruling party congress in 2021.

Kim Inae, a spokesperson for South Korea’s Unification Ministry, commented on North Korea’s military activities, suggesting that the routine display of military threats aims to create insecurity among South Korean citizens, undermine trust in their government, and attract international attention to force acceptance of North Korea’s demands.

As the situation continues to evolve, the international community closely monitors North Korea’s military activities, emphasizing the need for diplomatic efforts to address regional tensions and maintain stability on the Korean Peninsula.
