Health authorities in Kenya are grappling with a mysterious illness that has landed almost 100 schoolgirls in the hospital. The concerning situation unfolded at Eregi Girls High School, located in the town of Kakamega, leaving both students and authorities puzzled.
According to a report by the BBC, the affected students began experiencing difficulties in walking and complained of knee pain. The situation escalated as some girls reportedly suffered from leg paralysis and even convulsions. These distressing symptoms have led to speculations, with some suggesting that it could be a case of mass hysteria.
A video from the school capturing the girls’ struggles has gone viral on the internet, drawing attention to the alarming situation. Posted on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) by a user named Catch Up, the video’s caption read, “A possible case of mass hysteria has broken out at an all-girls school in western Kenya, with girls reporting that they are unable to walk.”
In response to the outbreak, a senior education ministry official visited the school and assured parents that the situation was under control. He further conveyed that classes would continue as usual for other pupils, as reported by the BBC.
Jared Obiero, the regional director of education, stated, “The education department, the county government, and the public health department are giving a commitment that the children will be treated.” In an effort to unravel the mystery behind the illness, blood, urine, and stool samples have been collected and sent to laboratories in Kisumu and Nairobi for analysis. The results of these samples are anticipated later this week.
