As Israeli airstrikes relentlessly pound the Gaza Strip, a looming humanitarian crisis unfolds as the enclave’s residents face dwindling water supplies, mounting garbage, shattered homes, and overwhelmed hospitals.
The desperate situation has forced some people to dig wells in areas near the sea or rely on salty tap water from Gaza’s sole aquifer, which is contaminated with sewage and seawater. In Khan Younis, two residents have volunteered to distribute water to displaced families, highlighting the dire need for basic resources.
The heaviest airstrikes in nine days of conflict have left many houses in ruins, and Gaza authorities report that over 2,750 people, predominantly civilians and including over 700 children, have lost their lives. Almost 10,000 more have been wounded, with an additional 1,000 people believed to be trapped under the rubble.
Israel’s full blockade of Gaza, as it prepares for a ground assault, has cut off essential services. Diplomatic efforts are underway to secure aid via Egypt. Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner general of the U.N. Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA, expressed deep concern, stating that Gaza is running out of water and electricity.
The densely populated Gaza Strip is one of the most crowded places on Earth, and the blockade leaves its 2.3 million residents with no way out. Despite international pleas for a ceasefire to allow aid access, Israeli Energy Minister Israel Katz insists there will be no end to the siege without the freedom of Israeli hostages held in Gaza.
Amid the dire water situation, even the 10% of Gaza’s aquifer water deemed safe for drinking is often mixed with poor-quality water during distribution, making it suitable only for washing. The territory’s only aquifer has long been contaminated by sewage, chemicals, and seawater, and neighborhood desalination facilities are a lifeline for residents.
The mounting garbage crisis adds to concerns of a health emergency, as piles of refuse accumulate on the streets and inside shelters for displaced individuals. Overcrowded hospitals struggle with shortages of medicines and fuel due to the blockade, leaving doctors with limited resources to treat the growing number of patients, including injured children.
