Maldives to Ban Israelis in Solidarity with Palestine Amid Gaza War

The Maldives, a popular luxury tourist destination in the Indian Ocean, has announced plans to ban Israeli tourists as a protest against the ongoing conflict in Gaza. President Mohamed Muizzu’s office stated that the decision to impose a ban on Israeli passports was made in solidarity with Palestine. Additionally, a national fundraising campaign titled “Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine” has been launched.

The Maldives, known for its pristine beaches and turquoise lagoons, had previously lifted a ban on Israeli tourists in the early 1990s and attempted to restore relations in 2010. However, these efforts were halted after political upheavals in 2012.

Pressure from opposition parties and government allies has led to President Muizzu’s decision to ban Israelis, following the recent escalation of the Gaza war. Official data shows a significant decrease in Israeli tourists visiting the Maldives this year compared to previous years.

In response to the ban, the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Israeli citizens to avoid travel to the Maldives. They also recommended that those currently in the country consider leaving due to potential difficulties in receiving assistance if needed.

The Gaza conflict, triggered by Hamas’s attack on Israel, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides. Hamas’s actions have led to civilian casualties in Israel, while Israel’s retaliatory offensive in Gaza has also caused civilian deaths, according to official figures.
