A devastating landslide in Ecuador has resulted in the loss of at least six lives, with 30 individuals reported missing, according to preliminary information from Ecuadorian authorities. The “large-magnitude” landslide struck the city of Banos de Agua Santa in the central part of the country, as confirmed by the Ecuadorean Secretariat for Risk Management.
Roberto Luque, Ecuador’s minister of public works, expressed solidarity with the affected families, acknowledging the tragic impact of the natural disaster.
The landslide occurred amid heavy rainfall triggered by low pressure, affecting several countries in Central and South America. This weather phenomenon led to increased warnings about the heightened risk of landslides, rock falls, and flooding in the region.
In response to the weather conditions, El Salvador’s civil protection agency declared a red alert due to heavy rains across the nation. Meanwhile, neighboring Guatemala witnessed flight diversions by several airlines, as communicated by the Guatemalan ministry of communications, infrastructure, and housing.
