Japan has simplified its visa process for Indian travelers by launching eVisas, providing a hassle-free experience for visitors. Here’s a complete guide to understanding the eligibility criteria and application process for this new system.
Starting from April 1, Indian passport holders no longer need physical visa stickers to enter Japan. The introduction of eVisas allows travelers to apply for visas electronically through Japan Visa Application Centers managed by VFS Global. This program permits visitors to stay in Japan for up to 90 days for tourism purposes.
Under the revamped system, applicants must still submit their applications to the Visa Application Centers overseen by VFS Global. However, the key change lies in the issuance of visas. Instead of traditional visa stickers on passports, successful applicants will receive electronic visas. Upon arrival at the airport, travelers need to present a ‘visa issuance notice’ on their mobile devices. It’s essential to have internet access for this process, as other formats like PDFs or printed copies are not valid.
Eligibility Criteria
The eVisa program is open to citizens and residents of various countries and regions, including Brazil, Taiwan, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Cambodia, Saudi Arabia, USA, as well as Indian citizens and foreign nationals residing in India. Exceptions are made for those exempt from short-term visas.
Application Process
Here’s a step-by-step guide to applying for a Japan eVisa:
- Visit the official website of the Japan Visa Application Centre managed by VFS Global: https://visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/jpn/.
- Select the “Temporary Visitor Visa” option and carefully review all visa requirements. Download and fill out the application form accurately, ensuring all fields are completed. Prepare photocopies of required documents.
- Schedule an appointment at the Visa Application Centre and receive a confirmation email with the letter of appointment.
- Submit your completed visa application form at the center during your appointment. Await an email notification regarding the status of your application.
- Approved applicants will receive an electronic visa instead of a physical visa sticker. Present the “visa issuance notice” on your mobile device at the airport check-in.
