Italy has launched a new visa program specifically designed for digital nomads, catering to professionals who work remotely while traveling globally or domestically. The program, effective from April 4, offers visas to eligible individuals for up to one year, providing an opportunity for non-EU citizens to live and work in Italy under certain conditions.
Who Qualifies as a Digital Nomad?
According to the Italian government, a digital nomad is a non-EU citizen engaged in “highly qualified work activity.” This includes self-employed individuals, collaborators, or employees of companies, even if not resident in Italy. The criteria aim to attract skilled professionals capable of contributing to Italy’s workforce and economy.
Eligibility Criteria for Italy’s Digital Nomad Visa:
- Non-EU nationals are eligible to apply for the digital nomad visa.
- Applicants must demonstrate an annual income of at least three times the minimum level required for exemption from health care participation expenses, approximately €28,000.
- Proof of accommodation in Italy for the duration of stay is required.
- Applicants should have a history of being a digital nomad or remote worker in another country for at least six months.
- No criminal convictions within the past five years.
Application Process for Italy’s Digital Nomad Visa:
Interested individuals must apply for the digital nomad visa at the Italian consulate in their country of residence. Upon approval and arrival in Italy, they must obtain a residence permit within eight days.
Renewal and Family Inclusion:
The digital nomad visa is renewable, provided the applicant continues to meet eligibility criteria. Beneficiaries can also include family members under specific conditions.
Italy’s participation in the EU’s Schengen open-borders area, comprising 29 member states including EU members, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, offers additional mobility benefits to visa holders.
The introduction of the digital nomad visa reflects Italy’s recognition of the growing trend of remote work and its desire to attract skilled professionals seeking flexible work arrangements.
