In a surge of cross-border violence, an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of five Hezbollah fighters. The attack occurred in the town of Mayfadun, near the southern city of Nabatiyeh. The Israeli military confirmed the strike, stating it targeted a Hezbollah military structure that was allegedly being used to orchestrate attacks against Israel.
This incident adds to the ongoing conflict that began in early October, following a major assault by Hamas on Israel. Since the escalation, which has seen near-daily exchanges of fire, the violence has claimed at least 555 lives in Lebanon. The casualties include a significant number of Hezbollah fighters and at least 116 civilians.
In retaliation for the Israeli strike, Hezbollah has launched multiple attacks on northern Israel, including using explosive-laden drones. One such attack targeted a barracks near the coastal town of Acre, resulting in injuries to two Israeli civilians. Israeli emergency services reported treating a 30-year-old man in serious condition and a 30-year-old woman with moderate injuries.
The violence has intensified recently, particularly after the high-profile killings of Hezbollah’s top military commander, Fuad Shukr, and Hamas political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, which are attributed to Israeli actions. These events have further strained tensions in the region, with Iran and its allies pledging retaliation.
