A disturbing video of strawberries under a microscope has sent waves of shock across the internet, highlighting the unseen world of tiny creatures that may inhabit our favorite fruits. Shared by Fred DiBiase on social media, the one-minute clip has garnered over 10 million views and 14,000 likes, sparking discussions about the presence of insects in seemingly healthy foods.
The video starts innocently with a person examining a strawberry under a microscope. However, the close-up reveals a startling sight – small insects crawling on the surface of the red fruit, along with a few worms emerging from within. The caption, “Let’s look at a strawberry under a telescope,” accompanied the clip, drawing attention to the unexpected discovery.
Social media users reacted with a mix of surprise and concern. Some shared tips on how to deal with potential insect infestations in fruits, while others expressed shock at the revelation. One user advised soaking strawberries in water with vinegar, baking soda, or salt for over 20 minutes to remove bugs, highlighting a common practice among cautious consumers.
This isn’t the first time such a video has circulated online. A similar clip surfaced in 2023, showcasing microscopic creatures on strawberries. Identified as spotted wing drosophila, an invasive fruit fly, these tiny insects lay eggs under the skin of berries, which later hatch into larvae. While the visuals may be unsettling, experts like entomologist Don Lewis reassure that refrigeration typically eliminates these insects from store-bought fruits.
Despite the alarming footage, experts emphasize that consuming these tiny creatures is generally not harmful. Entomologist Sriyanka Lahiri explains that insect infestation is common in agricultural products and is often unavoidable. Most importantly, there’s no evidence to suggest that these insects pose a health risk to consumers.
