Indonesia experienced a significant seismic event on Saturday night as a 6.5-magnitude earthquake shook the country’s West Java province. Fortunately, no tsunami alert was issued following the quake, according to the country’s meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency.
The earthquake struck at 23:29 Jakarta time (1629 GMT), with its epicenter located 151 kilometers southwest of Garut Regency. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, indicative of its undersea origin, as reported by the agency.
Despite its substantial magnitude, the earthquake did not result in giant waves or tsunami threats. The tremors, however, were felt across several regions, including the capital city Jakarta, nearby Banten province, and the provinces of Central Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java.
In West Java province, the quake’s impact was particularly notable, with Sukabumi town and Tasikmalaya town experiencing intensity levels of IV MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity). Bandung city, the provincial capital, felt tremors ranging from III to IV MMI, according to the agency’s assessment.
Given Indonesia’s geographical location within the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” an area known for frequent seismic activity, earthquakes are not uncommon in the region. The country remains vigilant in monitoring and responding to such natural events to ensure public safety.
