A 40-year-old Indian national in Singapore has been sentenced to 10 months in jail for causing the death of a 79-year-old woman due to reckless driving, reported The Straits Times on Thursday. Sivalingam Suresh pleaded guilty to driving a lorry without due care and attention, leading to the tragic incident in February.
The court was informed that Suresh’s careless driving resulted in a collision with the elderly woman as she crossed a zebra crossing near Ngee Ann Primary School. The impact caused her to sustain a fatal head injury, leading to her death on the same day.
Following the sentencing, Suresh, known for a history of driving offenses, will face an eight-year disqualification from holding or obtaining any classes of driving licenses upon his release.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Benedict Teong highlighted Suresh’s disregard for traffic regulations, citing previous instances of inconsiderate driving and running a red light. DPP Teong urged the court to impose a sentence of 10 to 11 months in jail and an eight-year driving ban.
The prosecutor clarified that there was no evidence indicating mechanical failure of the lorry contributing to the accident. Under the charge of causing death by driving a vehicle without due care and attention, Suresh could have faced a maximum penalty of three years in jail and a fine of up to 10,000 Singapore dollars.
