Greece's Skies Turn "Apocalyptic" Orange as Sahara Dust Storm Hits

A striking natural phenomenon engulfed Greece as strong winds carried Sahara Desert dust, transforming the skies into a surreal orange hue over Athens and other cities. The unusual sight captivated locals and tourists, with social media flooded with images and videos capturing the surreal scene.

The orange sky, described by some as “apocalyptic,” not only created a visually stunning spectacle but also led to concerns about air quality and health risks. Authorities warned of reduced sunlight and increased concentrations of fine pollution particles, particularly concerning for individuals with underlying health issues.

According to reports, this dust storm event significantly impacted air quality and contributed to elevated temperatures, exacerbating wildfire risks. The southern island of Crete experienced temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, far above typical levels for the region.

The strong winds also fueled unseasonal wildfires across the country, with 25 incidents reported within 24 hours. Additionally, authorities arrested individuals suspected of unintentionally starting a fire on the Aegean Sea island of Paros.

The yellow-orange haze caused limited visibility and prompted warnings from officials regarding respiratory risks. Kostas Lagouvardos, weather research director at the Athens Observatory, highlighted the severity of the dust and sand concentrations, comparing it to a similar event in 2018.

As the dust storm subsides, the Greek weather service anticipates clearer skies and a return to normal air conditions. Despite the spectacle and challenges posed by this event, authorities are optimistic about a gradual improvement in air quality and weather conditions in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
