In response to the ongoing conflicts with Russia, the United Nations (UN) has launched a plea for $4.2 billion in funding to provide essential support to war-ravaged communities in Ukraine and assist Ukrainian refugees in 2024.
The appeal, led by the UN and its partners, aims to address the dire humanitarian situation in Ukraine, where more than 14.6 million people, representing 40% of the country’s population, are anticipated to require humanitarian assistance this year due to Russia’s full-scale invasion. The conflict has left hundreds of thousands of children living in fear, trauma, and deprivation of basic needs, emphasizing the urgency of increased humanitarian aid, as emphasized by U.N. aid chief Martin Griffiths.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) highlights that over 3.3 million individuals in need are situated in front-line communities in the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine, including territories occupied by Russia, where access remains significantly impeded.
As part of the appeal, OCHA is seeking $3.1 billion to provide critical assistance to 8.5 million people facing severe humanitarian needs in 2024. Simultaneously, the UN refugee agency is requesting $1.1 billion to support 2.3 million Ukrainian refugees and their host communities.
Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, approximately 6.3 million people have been displaced from Ukraine, seeking refuge abroad. Within the country, four million people, including nearly one million children, remain internally displaced, according to OCHA.
Filippo Grandi, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, emphasized the ongoing efforts of host countries to provide protection and integration for refugees but acknowledged that many vulnerable individuals still require assistance. He stressed that refugees should not feel compelled to return if they struggle to make ends meet in exile.
The international community faces a critical task in responding to the UN’s appeal, recognizing the pressing need to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the conflict and displacement in Ukraine.
