Rising Toll in Gaza Conflict
The Gaza Strip continues to bear the devastating consequences of the conflict, with the Hamas-controlled health ministry reporting that over 4,100 people have lost their lives since Israel initiated its bombardment. This staggering death toll is accompanied by a grim statistic of more than 13,000 individuals injured in the Israeli strikes, which have persisted since October 7.
Tragic Incident at Greek Orthodox Church Shelter
In a tragic incident, 16 people lost their lives at the compound of the Greek Orthodox church of Saint Porphyrius in Gaza City on Thursday. According to the health ministry, around 500 people had sought refuge at the church, including five members of Caritas staff and their families. NGO Caritas Internationalis expressed their deep sorrow over the loss of a colleague, Viola, along with her husband and their infant daughter in the strike.
“We were devastated to learn of the death of our colleague Viola, 26-year-old, who was killed alongside her husband and their infant daughter,” the NGO stated. The strike has left at least 17 people dead, with the possibility of more individuals still trapped under the rubble.
The Target of the Strike
Eyewitnesses indicated that the strike appeared to have been aimed at a target close to the church, where numerous Gaza residents had sought refuge amid the ongoing conflict. The Israeli army stated that their fighter jets had targeted a “command and control centre” associated with Hamas, responsible for launching rockets towards Israel. As a result of the strike, the church’s wall sustained damage.
Medical Personnel and Health Facilities Under Strain
The Hamas health ministry revealed that 46 medical personnel have lost their lives in the conflict, with an additional 85 wounded. Moreover, 21 health facilities are currently out of service due to a shortage of fuel, adding to the strain on the region’s healthcare system.
Humanitarian Aid Waited Upon
The people of Gaza continue to await humanitarian aid, which is yet to enter the region from Egypt through the Rafah crossing. The delay in humanitarian assistance further exacerbates the humanitarian crisis in the region.
Conflict Background
The conflict in Gaza escalated after Hamas carried out a deadly raid on southern Israel on October 7. The raid resulted in the loss of more than 1,400 lives, predominantly civilians, on Israeli soil. The ongoing violence has heightened concerns about the escalating toll on civilian lives and the urgent need for a ceasefire and humanitarian assistance in the region.
