Key promises that Braverman accuses Sunak of breaking include the reduction of illegal migration, stopping migrant boats crossing the English Channel, issuing statutory guidance to schools for the protection of biological sex, and delivering on the North Ireland protocol.
The letter boldly asserts that Sunak’s plan is not working, citing record election defeats, failed resets, and a diminishing timeframe. It criticizes Sunak’s rejection of withdrawal from the European Convention on Human Rights as a means to push through a scheme related to asylum seekers, labeling it a “betrayal” and a reliance on wishful thinking to avoid making tough decisions.
Braverman’s letter refers to the much-anticipated Supreme Court ruling on the legality of the government’s plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, describing Sunak’s approach as irresponsibility that has left the country in an impossible position.
The former Home Secretary’s departure comes in the wake of controversial comments she made last week about the police’s handling of a pro-Palestinian march. In an article published by The Times, Braverman accused the police of “playing favorites” during protests and claimed they largely ignored “pro-Palestinian mobs.” The comments escalated tensions at pro-Palestinian rallies, leading to increased pressure for her removal from Sunak’s cabinet.
