Copenhagen’s Old Stock Exchange, a renowned 17th-century building, was engulfed in flames on Tuesday, resulting in the collapse of its iconic dragon-tailed spire, reminiscent of the Notre-Dame Cathedral fire in Paris in 2019. The incident has drawn attention to the historical significance of the building, one of the Danish capital’s most prominent landmarks.
Constructed in the Dutch Renaissance style on the orders of King Christian IV, the Old Stock Exchange opened its doors in 1624 as a hub for commodities trading. Over the centuries, it evolved from market stalls to a center for security trading until 1974 when it became the headquarters and conference venue of the Danish Chamber of Commerce.
The dragon-tailed spire, a symbol of protection against enemies and fire, was a distinctive feature of the building, designed by King Christian IV’s firework master during its completion in 1623.
Tuesday’s fire, shrouding the Old Stock Exchange in flames and dense grey smoke, raised concerns about the building’s preservation. The cause of the blaze remains uncertain, although the structure was undergoing extensive restoration ahead of its 400th anniversary to restore its original Renaissance charm.
The presence of scaffolding around the building complicated firefighting efforts, hampering emergency services’ access to the flames. Additionally, the copper roof, part of the restoration process, contributed to preserving the heat within the building.
The incident has prompted reflections on the historical and architectural significance of the Old Stock Exchange and underscores the challenges in preserving centuries-old landmarks amidst modern restoration efforts.
