In response to Iran’s recent drone and missile attack on Israel, European Union leaders have decided to impose fresh sanctions on Iran’s drone and missile manufacturers. The decision was announced by EU chief Charles Michel during an EU summit held in Brussels.
The sanctions aim to target companies involved in the production of drones and missiles, signaling a clear message of condemnation from the European Council. Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel over the weekend, though causing minimal damage due to interception of most projectiles, marked a significant escalation in tensions in the region.
The attack by Iran was triggered by a deadly incident at the Iranian consulate in Damascus, which Tehran blamed on Israel. In the aftermath, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that Israel would determine its response to the attack, while global powers called for restraint to prevent further escalation of hostilities.
The EU leaders, in their summit statement, urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions in the region. This move by the EU follows previous sanctions imposed on Iran related to its drone supply to Russia for the conflict in Ukraine, although these sanctions have had limited impact on Iran’s relations with Moscow.
