A deadly mass shooting at Sweden’s Campus Risbergska school has left at least 10 people dead, including the suspected gunman, in what authorities have described as the worst mass shooting in the country’s history.
The attack took place on the outskirts of Orebro, a city about 200 kilometers (125 miles) west of Stockholm. The school serves students over 20 years old, offering primary and upper secondary courses, Swedish language classes for immigrants, vocational training, and programs for people with intellectual disabilities.
Gunman Acted Alone, No Terrorism Links Suspected
Local police chief Roberto Eid Forest said that the crime scene suffered extensive damage, making it difficult for investigators to establish the exact details of the attack. However, authorities confirmed that the perpetrator acted alone and had no prior criminal record. Police also stated that there were no warning signs before the attack and no known links to terrorism.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots. Teacher Lena Warenmark told Swedish broadcaster SVT News that she counted around 10 shots. “There were unusually few students on campus Tuesday afternoon after an exam,” she added.
Amid the chaos, students and staff were evacuated and sheltered in a nearby building. One survivor, 28-year-old Andreas Sundling, described the terror of the moment. “We heard three bangs and loud screams,” he said, adding that many were forced to barricade themselves inside classrooms for safety.
Sweden’s Prime Minister Condemns Attack
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the shooting as “a very painful day for all of Sweden” and the “worst mass shooting in Swedish history.”
“My thoughts are with all those whose normal school day was exchanged for terror. Being confined to a classroom with fear for your own life is a nightmare that no one should have to experience,” Kristersson said in a statement.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer also addressed the tragedy, calling the situation “very serious” and confirming that the government is closely monitoring the developments.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are still working to determine the final death toll and the number of wounded victims. Police have classified the case as an “attempted murder, arson, and aggravated weapons offense.”
The attack has shocked Sweden, a country known for its low crime rates and strict gun control laws. As investigations continue, the nation mourns the tragic loss of lives in this unprecedented act of violence.
