A devastating fire at a drug rehabilitation center in Iran’s Caspian Sea province of Gilan has resulted in the loss of 32 lives and left 16 individuals injured. The incident, which occurred on Friday, has once again highlighted safety issues and the severe addiction problem facing the country.
According to reports from Iran’s local media, the injured were swiftly transported to hospitals in Langroud city, situated approximately 200 kilometers northwest of Tehran. The first responders were called to the scene shortly before 6 am local time to manage the tragic situation.
Efforts to contain the fire were eventually successful, but an extensive investigation is now underway to determine the cause and circumstances of the incident. Authorities have also initiated inquiries into the center’s management and officials, as reported by Iran Wire, citing the judiciary’s Mizan news agency.
It has been revealed that the facility’s capacity was intended to accommodate around 40 people, emphasizing the overcrowded conditions often found in such centers.
Unfortunately, incidents like this are not uncommon in Iran and are often attributed to various factors, including inadequate safety measures, aging facilities, and the lack of effective emergency services. The country’s location along the primary trafficking route for poppy, the source of opium and heroin, from Afghanistan to Western Europe, exacerbates the challenges associated with drug addiction.
