A private primary school in China’s Guangdong province, Jiesheng Primary School, has sparked outrage and disbelief after announcing plans to charge students for afternoon naps during the upcoming school year. A screenshot from a school notice, shared on the Chinese social media platform WeChat, revealed a fee structure for napping options without providing a clear explanation for the charges.
According to the notice, students who choose to nap at their desks will be charged 200 yuan (approximately US$28). Opting for mats in the classrooms will cost them 360 yuan (about US$49.29), and those who prefer private rooms with beds will face a whopping 680 yuan (around US$93.10) charge.
The school has stated that teachers will be present to supervise the students during these nap sessions.
Local education officials in China have clarified that this regulation is not a uniform decision but added that private schools in the country have the authority to implement such policies. A school staff member confirmed the institution’s intention to charge students for napping but emphasized that it is not mandatory, as students can choose to go home during their lunch break.
The staff member explained that the nap charges align with official regulations, and each school can independently decide on the fee structure. Dongguan City Development and Reform Bureau spokesman supported the charges, stating that they are reasonable because teachers will be present to look after and supervise the students during their nap sessions.
The news of this unusual fee structure has ignited strong reactions on Chinese social media platforms. Many users expressed their disbelief and criticism of the school’s decision. Some users questioned the necessity of charging students for something as fundamental as sleep, while others humorously wondered if the school would soon introduce fees for restroom use or even breathing.
The controversy over this fee for naps highlights the challenges and debates surrounding the cost of education and the increasing commercialization of schooling in various parts of the world.
It remains to be seen whether the school will reconsider its decision in response to the public outcry and criticism.
As this story continues to gain attention, it underscores the importance of discussions surrounding education policies and the well-being of students, both in China and globally.
