In a notable case of political misconduct, Zhong Yang, a former governor in China’s Guizhou province, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison and fined one million yuan (approximately ₹1.18 crore) for her involvement in widespread corruption and personal misconduct. The 52-year-old official, often referred to as the “beautiful governor” due to her looks, was found guilty of engaging in sexual relations with 58 male subordinates while accepting nearly 60 million yuan in bribes.
Zhong, who joined the Communist Party at the age of 22, rose through the ranks to serve as the deputy secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in Qiannan prefecture and held a position in the National People’s Congress (NPC). Known for her initiatives to support farmers and aid the elderly, her reputation has been significantly tarnished by recent revelations.
A January documentary produced by Guizhou Radio and Television exposed her alleged misconduct, detailing how she accepted bribes and manipulated contracts to favor companies with which she had personal connections. It was reported that she approved land development projects for a businessman close to her, while neglecting other firms without personal ties.
The documentary also highlighted that some of her subordinates engaged in relationships with Zhong to gain professional advantages, while others felt compelled due to her authority. She reportedly utilized work-related pretexts to spend time with these individuals.
Zhong was arrested in April 2023 and subsequently expelled from the CPC. In September, she lost her positions within both the CPC and the NPC. During the documentary, she expressed deep regret for her actions, acknowledging the shame she felt towards her colleagues and family.
Reflecting on her past, Zhong admitted to having strayed from the values her parents instilled in her, stating, “I didn’t take their advice to heart,” as she recalled their simple family meals symbolizing purity and integrity.
