The Speaker of Canada’s House of Commons, Anthony Rota, has announced his resignation in the wake of a public controversy surrounding his praise of a former Nazi soldier during a parliamentary session. The incident occurred during a session honoring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and has ignited a firestorm of criticism and outrage.

Rota publicly recognized 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka, referring to him as a hero and inviting him to attend the parliamentary session last Friday. However, it soon emerged that Hunka had served in one of Adolf Hitler’s Waffen SS units during World War Two, leading to widespread condemnation.

In a statement to legislators, Rota acknowledged his error in judgment, saying, “That public recognition has caused pain to individuals and communities, including the Jewish community in Canada and around the world … I accept full responsibility for my actions.” Rota, a member of the ruling Liberal party, revealed that his resignation would take effect on Wednesday, with a deputy speaker assuming responsibility until then.

The controversy surrounding Rota’s praise of Hunka played directly into the narrative put forth by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin has repeatedly claimed that his military intervention in Ukraine in 2022 aimed to “demilitarize and denazify” the country, a charge vehemently denied by Kyiv and Western allies.

The incident marred the visit of Ukrainian President Zelenskiy, who had come to Canada to express gratitude for the substantial aid and weaponry provided by Canada since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Foreign Minister Melanie Joly had earlier called for Rota’s resignation, while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged the Speaker to reflect on his future. Despite opposition parties pointing fingers at the Trudeau government’s perceived shortcomings in handling the situation, Rota maintained that he bore sole responsibility for the controversy, noting that Hunka resides in his parliamentary constituency.
